NORDTING: Davvediggi / The Northern Assembly
11 March / 21.00
Black Box teater, Store scene

– a nomadic people’s parliament of the North
– a party for the periphery
– a separatist movement for the Arctic colony

With an ambition to question and change both the narrative of the North and the power regime of the North, The Northern Assembly has spent the last years traveling throughout the Arctic. With the help of marching bands, stockfish, powerpoint and political analysis, over 60 assembly meetings have been held – from Anchorage to Nuuk, from Reykjavik to Kirkenes. Tons of t-shirts have been sold. Gallons of vodka have been drunk. Songs have been sung, prayers have been made and people have voted for independence for the North – time and time again.

To have an assembly in Oslo, makes perfect sense. The southern capital of Norway is a center of power – both in politics, economy and art. This is one of the places that defines the North. The Arctic is an area with classical colonial traits. The capitals are always located in the south, the political power is always in the south, the art institutions and funding bodies are always in the south: The very power of definition is in the south.

The economic and developmental discourse is describing the arctic as a frontiér, a liminal zone, a tabula rasa, a land of possibilities for conquerors and investors. NORDTING offers a chance to raise voices, to take part in democratic and speculative rituals, and to establish a common place of reflection. NORDTING offers a space to fight back.

NORDTING always includes the local community on stage; it might be youth punk bands or a choir, a singer-songwriter, a group of cheerleaders or the local mayor. Because NORDTING put both global and very local issues up for a vote, it is crucial to have the community present in the hall.

Amund Sjølie Sveen is a North-Norwegian artist, born and raised in Finnmark, far above the Arctic Circle. He is a writer, researcher, marching-band drummer and the artistic director of NORDTING. His work focuses on the narratives and power struggles in the north, taking the Arctic as a starting point for investigating both local and international political questions in our globalized world of market economy.
